Seed Savers Exchange

Packet Description:

“Imported from Italy. A top quality late maturing onion with golden globe-shaped bulbs weighing an average of 1 pound. One of the best for storage. Long-day type. 110 days from transplant.”

SSE Green Thumb Tip:

“Sow seeds indoors in flats 1/4” deep and space 1” in all directions. Transplant outdoors as soon as soil can be worked in spring. Keep onions well weeded with shallow cultivation.

We have had little success with onions so far. Only attempting them a few years. Sometimes from seed, or sets. Sets to date have won our biggest victory, producing a small batch of edible bulbs. The largest of which were a few golf ball sized but better than nothing. This pack of seeds is currently 7 years old. Stored in a dry place I am hopeful that something grows but if no worries if they don’t. This year we will be trying sets, and starts as well as seeds.

Plant Spacing: Rows 18” Plants 6” apart

Sun Exposure: Full

Days to germination: 4-10

Days to harvest: 110 from transplant
